Machine is the Blind Gut Company’s experimental contemporary circus production that turns its attention to the relationship between humans and modern technology. In Machine, bodies, machines and technologies engage in conversation, against the backdrop of a surrealist landscape. The human and the digital, flesh and metal, meet seeking meaning in each other and in their own existence. Who is in control of whom? The dialogue is conducted with the help of a giant counterweight built with trusses, as well as tightrope walking, aerial acrobatics and object manipulation.
The production is the result of the ensemble’s desire to highlight the role played by technology, particularly digital technology, in the sphere of human reality, as well as the changes its arrival is bringing about, both in individuals and across society as a whole. Has the proliferation of technologies, they ask, made us happier or freer?
Blind Gut Company is a contemporary circus group founded by Inga Björn, Saana Peura and Tuomas Vuorinen in 2015. All three members share a passion for bold, meaningful circus that is unafraid to take a stand and address topical issues. They believe in circus’s expressive potential and have a blind faith in the power of their works to change the world.
Premiere at Les Boréales Festival, France, 17 November 2016.
